Extend ‘price freeze’ to petroleum, electricity – group
THE youth group Anakbayan urged the Dept. of Trade and Industry (DTI) today to extend its price freeze to petroleum products and electricity in light of the recent floods which have affected at least 1.2 million people in Luzon.
At the height of the floods this week, oil firms Petron, Shell, and Total hiked their pump prices of gasoline, diesel, and kerosene. At the same, MERALCO also increased its generation charge.
“It’s unfair to go after small-time profiteers while allowing large corporations to take advantage of the chaotic situation and add to the misery of the flood victims and other ordinary Filipinos” said Vencer Crisostomo, national chairperson of Anakbayan, said in a statement.
“In fact, oil price and electricity hikes might even push the prices of basic commodities even further” he said.
Citing a similar price freeze during the aftermath of the floods caused by typhoon Ondoy in 2009, the youth leader said that ‘only political will is needed’ in implementing such a freeze today.
“This is definitely a type of much-needed relief” said Crisostomo.
