40 local farmer technicians complete training on IPM
FORTY of seventy-five local farmer technicians (LFTs) of Region 12 were given certificates of completion after undergoing five-day training on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) at USM-ATI, Kabacan, North Cotabato.
Aside from IPM, these LFTs were also trained on various farming operations like postharvest management and farmer-led extension services aimed at preparing them to begin their classes at their respective areas of operations.
As LFTs, they will perform as agricultural extension workers who, through farmers’ field school (FFS) will teach their co-farmers regarding new farming technologies.
DA 12 Regional Executive Director Amalia J. Datukan handed over the certificates to these LFTs challenging them to perform at their best by introducing new technologies to the farmers as well as accommodating their concerns.
“As LFTs, you will serve as the active partners of the DA and the Local Government Units (LGUs) in promoting and disseminating modern technologies in rice production to your fellow farmers,” Datukan said.
“Panimula pa lamang ito, marami pang mga kasunod by October,” she added.
Datukan cheered these LFTs up encouraging them to be role models to their co-farmers because they hold the right knowledge regarding farming technologies
The second batch of LFTs will undertake similar training on IPM next week.
DA 12 will give these local farmer technicians a performance incentive package equivalent to P 3,000.00 per month.
Hiring farmers as LFTs is one of the DA’s ingenuities in ensuring greater rice productivity thereby achieving rice self-sufficiency in the following years.
It can be remembered that DA 12 together with the 75 LFTs have signed a contract last August 7 in Koronadal City.
