Green groups urge the govt to file additional case vs Reyes brothers
TASK Force Justice for Environmental Defenders (Task Force JED) and environmental political group Kalikasan Partylist asked the Aquino government and Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to file an additional case against fugitive brothers former Palawan governor Joel Reyes and Coron Mayor Mario Reyes.
“The plight of Reyes brothers clearly manifest their guilt and to elude prosecutionon the murder of Dr. Ortega. It is damnable that the Reyes use fake travel documents and colluded with government officials in escaping out of the country,” said Clemente Bautista Jr of Task Force JED.
The Reyes brothers are suspects in masterminding the assassination of environmental activists Dr. Gerry Ortega.
“The government should also charge and prosecute in absentia the Reyes brothers in using fake Philippines passports. The Bureau of Immigration and DFA already have evidences and witnesses that the brothers have illegally run away out of the country. This will show if the Aquino government and its agencies are really genuine in correcting their failure to allow the brothers to escape.”
Based on the Philippine Passport Act any person who falsely makes, forges, counterfeits, mutilates or alters any passport or travel documents shall be punished by a fine of not more than One hundred fifty thousand pesos (150,000) and imprisonment of not less than six (6) years nor more than fifteen (15) years.
Meanwhile, Kalikasan Partylist demanded the Court of Appeals to uphold the murder case filed by Department of Justice (DOJ) and the warrant of arrest issued by Palawan Regional Trial Court against the murder-suspects Reyes brothers.
“We see no reasons why the Court of Appeals should not validate the findings and uphold the case of DOJ against the fugitive brothers. We hope that the power and influence of fugitive brothers will not sway the men and women in CA to decide in favor of the controversial murder suspects,” said Leon Dulce, spokeperson of KalikasanPartylist.
Marlon Recamata, the triggerman in the Ortega shooting, and his accomplices admitted to the crime and pinpointed to the Reyes brothers who hired them and masterminded the murder.
“If these admissions and evidences presented by DOJ are not strong enough to prosecute the Reyes brothers, we don’t know what will. Again we must be vigilant and persistent to get justice as the brothers has a lot of money and still got influence to get favorable decision on their case,” Dulce explained.
