Group slams violent demolition in Guatemala

CHILD welfare group, Akap Bata Party-List, condemned today  the violent demolition attempt in Guatemala Street in Barangay San Isidro, Makati City.

The group said that the Makati City government, headed by Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay Jr. through his spokesperson Joey Salgado have lied and betrayed their constituents as they announced through the media that there will be no demolition in the area.

It can be recalled that right after the lapse of the 60-day Certificate of Compliance issued by Makati local government last week (September 19), Salgado assured the residents that no demolition will take place in Guatemala because according to them, they were just encouraging the settlers to voluntary leave the community.

Before the violent demolition today, Akap Bata Party-List evacuated the children and moved them in a nearby church early this morning so that they will not be able to experience trauma brought by the demolition. The group said that children don’t deserve to be on situations such as demolitions.

The almost 250 families residing in the 870,000 square meter lot were demolished today to pave the way for the construction of a three-storey multi-purpose building that comes with the barangay hall, health center and covered basketball and badminton courts. The project amounts to P100 million.

‘Clearly, the recent demolition act of the local government of Makati is their desperate move as they failed to deceive the residents of Guatemala Street to accept and avail their various relocation packages and assistance. From the start, the residents never gave in to the conditions of the city government to put them in to a worse condition than what they are experiencing now,’ says Lean Flores, national spokesperson of Akap Bata Party-List.

She added, ‘The relocation site that they are offering in Calauan, Laguna is a mere staging area on a school. Without concrete houses, it is inhumane for the residents, most especially their children to develop as human rather will only worsen their already miserable and poverty-stricken conditions. Livelihood and basic social services surely lack on such relocation’

Akap Bata Party-List further tells Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas to emulate his predecessor, Sec. Jesse Robredo to issue a demolition moratorium order nationwide in order to prevent similar cases of violent demolitions.

They also urge President Benigno Simeon Aquino III and the father of the mayor of Makati, Vice President Jejomar Binay to intervene on the issue and grant the residents with their legitimate rights to homes, jobs and social justice.
