Group urges MRT/LRT riding public to oppose Roxas’ confirmation

THE fisherfolk alliance on Sunday appealed to commuters of MRT/LRT to oppose the confirmation of newly installed Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas, whom  the group accused of masterminding the proposed increase in the fares of LRT/MRT scheduled next year.

Pamalakaya vice chairperson Salvador France asked commuters to write the influential Commission on Appointment (CA) expressing their wholesale rejection of Roxas to the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) post.

“The Filipino riding public should teach Mr. Roxas a lesson of a lifetime and this partner in crime of President Benigno Simeon Aquino III should not be entrusted of any position in the government because of his anti-poor and anti-people programs and policies such as the proposed gigantic increases in the fares of LRT and MRT. To the Filipino public please write the appointment commission and tell them we don’t need Mar Roxas at the DILG,” France said in a statement.

He said Roxas is a national threat to people’s interest and collective will given the secretary’s position on MRT/LRT hike which is contrary to public interest. “Mar is a triple platinum puppet of transnational corporations and big business groups. We cannot rely on him to defend people’s interest and public welfare at the DILG because he is the man of money making entities,” added France.

At a recent hearing of the House Committee on Appropriation regarding the proposed DOTC budget next year, Roxas argued that dispensing government subsidies for the operations of the MRT and LRT is “unfair” to provincial taxpayers who do not benefit from the service.

But Pamalakaya, quoting a previous study made by the umbrella alliance Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) said that MRT/LRT commuters are already paying for the basic cost of service with the existing fares.

According to a study made by Bayan last year, debt servicing comprises almost P 51.64 of the alleged P 60.75 full cost fare of the MRT – revealing that the actual cost of operating and maintenance (O&M) expenses is only at P9.11 for each MRT passenger.  This means that each commuter already pays between P 0.89 to P 5.89 more than the actual cost of the service.

“Secretary Roxas is creating an intrigue by telling the people of Mindanao and Visayas that they are subsidizing the LRT/MRT fares of people in the National Capital Region. This guy is not only rabid pro-business, he is also a certified trouble maker and a gossiper, and a trouble maker-gossiper is not welcome in any civilian post like the DILG,” said Pamalakaya.
