Solon condemns killing of transport leader
ANAKPAWIS Rep. Rafael V. Mariano condemned the extra-judicial killing of Poncing Infante, leader of transport organization Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Operators Nationwide (PISTON) chapter in Central Luzon. Infante is also the leader of the biggest jeepney federation in Angeles City.
Infante was shot by two motorcycle-riding men last September 3 in a jeepney terminal in Barangay Pandan, near Marquee Mall in Angeles City, Pampanga. Transport group PISTON is an affiliate of Anakpawis Partylist.
“This vicious killing of another transport leader highlights the prevailing culture of impunity and human rights abuses under the Aquino presidency,” said Mariano.
“The body count must stop. It is extremely offensive that the government allows this spate of politically-motivated killing of civilians to continue. Walang iniwan ang gobyernong Aquino sa rekord ng gobyernong Arroyo sa usapin ng paglabag sa karapatang pantao.”
The solon blamed Aquino’s counter-insurgency program, Oplan Bayanihan as the blueprint of continuing human rights violations in the country. “Oplan Bayanihan targets civilians, activists, leaders of progressive organizations and critics of the government. We only have the military to blame for this latest killing,” Mariano said.
Infante is the fourth transport leader killed under the Aquino presidency. Since 2010, human rights groups have documented more than a hundred victims of extra-judicial killings under Aquino.
PISTON-Caraga leader Felix Cultura was killed last March, Erning Gulfo of PISTON chapter in Gasak-Divisoria was killed last May, and Ka Jing of PISTON Baclaran-Divisoria was killed last June. “Families of the victims are demanding for justice as perpetrators of these killings remain scot-free.”
“Like many Filipinos, Infante is opposing the government’s inaction towards excessive oil prices and the greediness of oil companies that impose weekly oil price hikes,” Mariano said.
