Solon denounces violent demolition in Makati
ANAKPAWIS Partylist Rep. Rafael Mariano strongly condemned the violent demolition at Guatemala Compound, Barangay San Isidro, Makati City. “This incident is an unfavourable way of showing “Ganito kami sa Makati,” said Mariano, referring to Makati’s slogan popularized by the Binays.
Since this morning, some 256 families, all residents of Guatemala Compound and members of the hired demolition team, Makati City Police and Special Weapons Action Team (SWAT) were engaged in a violent clash after the city government of Makati under Mayor Jejomar ‘JunJun’ Binay Jr. ordered the demolition of structures within the said compound.
“As we saw in the TV footages, residents were forced to retaliate and defend their homes against the demolition order. This violent incident in Makati is reminiscent of previous violent demolitions that happened under Aquino’s watch – the demolitions in Brgy, San Roque in Quezon City; Brgy. Corazon de Jesus in San Juan City; and Silverio Compound in Paranaque City.”
The Makati City government reportedly ordered the demolition in Guatemala Compound to give way to the construction of a multipurpose building that includes a sports complex and other government facilities. The residents were reportedly offered relocation in Calamba, Laguna. “Makati City government wanted to rid the city of ‘eye sores’ and resorted to violence to uproot residents from their homes.”
“As usual, the government neglected the interests of its constituents defending their homes and demanding for decent housing and livelihood,” the solon said.
Mariano said violent demolitions will persist in other areas as long as the Aquino government prioritizes the implementation of Public-Private Partnership projects (PPPs) that are detrimental to the public’s interests.
