Trader couple shot dead

TAYABAS, CITY – Three unidentified pistol-wielding men shot a fruit dealer and his wife, killing them instantly while on transit on their way to adjacent city at Bgy. Isabang, here, dawn Friday.

City police head, Chief Insp. Manny Calma identified the victims as Antonio Dayanan, 58, and his wife Teresita, 50, and residing at said village.

In a phone interview, Calma said the couple’s bodies bore several bullet wounds from cal. 45 pistols.

He said the victims were on their passenger jeep driven by Antonio and heading towards Lucena City to deliver banana at around 3:30 a.m. when suddenly waylaid by three unidentified men on motorcycles killing them on the spot.

Quoting witnesses’ accounts, Calma said that as the jeep stopped on the road shortly after the shooting, the suspects approached the lifeless couple and took away undetermined amount of cash.

Upon receiving telephone call, policemen manning a Police Assistance Center at the adjacent village quickly responded but the suspects were already gone far.

They recovered pieces of live bullets and spent shells for cal. 45 pistol.

Calma said probers tried to locate a certain Arvin Armaniego, 27, at his residence in the said village but he was not around.

He said it has been known in the village that Armaniego has an axe to grind with Antonio.

“Armaniego has been accusing Antonio of blowing the whistle in connection with string of theft and robbery charges pending against him in Lucena City courts”, said Calma.

While talking with the probers, Calma said Armaniego’s wife did not categorically deny that her husband had something to do with the couple’s killing.

Asked if they consider Armaniego a suspect, Calma said they are still gathering information and looking for witness that would pinpoint him.

“At the moment, we’re not yet saying that Armaniego is a suspect since we still have no concrete evidence on hand to indict him in the killing. We only tried to invite him for questioning because he is the only known adversary of Antonio in the village”, he said.
