Aquino’s irresponsible remarks on party-list disqualification issue hit
ANAKPAWIS Vice-Chairperson Fernando Hicap today said President Benigno Aquino III’s irresponsible dabbling into the issue of party-list disqualification in effect justifies the perpetuation of fake party lists of multimillionaires that do not genuinely represent the interests and legislative agenda of marginalized sectors.
“The President cannot fully understand the significance of having genuine representatives of workers, farmers and poor sectors in Congress. He came from a political dynasty and a family of traditional politicians,” Hicap said.
“President Aquino’s back-to-back statements deriding the low survey ratings of Makabayan senatorial candidate and Bayan Muna Rep. Teddy Casino and his blatant defending of Akbayan’s receipt of multimillion electoral funds from his sisters during the 2010 elections all the more exposed Malacanang and Akbayan’s ‘symbiotic political opportunism’.
“It is expected for the President to defend Akbayan. For their part, Akbayan have been loyally toeing the line of the Cojuangco-Aquinos on important national concerns, particularly on land reform and Hacienda Luisita that are among the major economic interests of the President’s family.”
“How can Akbayan truly represent the interest of millions of poor workers and farmers when they are politically-indebted to the Cojuangco-Aquino landlord clan?” Hicap asked. “That is not logical.”
“Akbayan uses the clout and resources of the Cojuangco-Aquinos while pretending to be representing marginalized sectors. But in reality, their views, stand point and actions on people’s issues perpetuate the exploitative social system dominated by landlords and bureaucrat capitalists. Without doubt, Akbayan represents the interests of the ruling classes.”
“Now, Akbayan and other groups are calling for the disqualification of progressive party-lists like Bayan Muna, Anakpawis and Gabriela that are critical to the Aquino government’s policies.”
Hicap added, “in their desperate attempt to discredit our track record and legitimate causes, pro-Malacanang groups have tagged us as ‘communist party lists.’ Akbayan have lost all its reason and self-respect and resorted to archaic anti-communist hysteria.”
“We hope that the Commission on Elections (Comelec) will decide conscientiously and morally on the issue of disqualification of bogus party lists and consider the interest of majority of Filipinos,” Hicap said.
