Comelec registration deadline illegal
“YOU should probably act more like an understanding lolo, than a grumpy old man.” This was the statement of Atty. Terry Ridon, National President and General Counsel of Kabataan Partylist in reaction to reports that COMELEC chairperson “conducted a sermon” to young people rushing to register at COMELEC offices to beat the October 31 election registration deadline.
He said that Brilliantes should not act that way because the October 31 registration deadline is illegal in the first place.
“In 2009, the Supreme Court has already ruled that the COMELEC cannot prematurely terminate the continuing registration of voters before the prohibitive period of election registration defined under the law – 120 days before the regular elections.”
Ridon said that the COMELEC is again committing the same error by declaring the registration deadline on October 31, which is the same deadline rejected by the Supreme Court in 2009.
Ridon said that they had already sent the COMELEC a letter-request to extend the registration of voters and comply with the deadline set by law – the 12th of January 2013.
