Dumingag mayor receives One World Award 2012 in Germany
THE Municipality of Dumingag, Zamboanga del Sur. Region IX, Mindanao won the One World Award (OWA), an international competition jointly sponsored by International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movement (IFOAM) and Rapunzel Naturkost.
On behalf of Dumingag town, Mayor Nacianceno M. Pacalioga, Jr. received the award with a specially sculpted OWA lady statue and 25,000 Euro.
IFOAM is the umbrella organization of organic practitioners and advocates worldwide with over 800 member-organizations, while Rapunzel Naturkost is one of the biggest organic foodstuffs manufacturers in Germany.
In the awarding ceremony last September 14 at the Rapunzel headquarters in Legau, Germany, jury member Vandana Shiva said the OWA jury unanimously selected Mayor Pacalioga because there is hardly any mayor nowadays who is really focused in social development rather than in enriching himself.
Secondly, adopting organic agriculture, not merely as technology, but as a development framework and foundation of a program government is a very innovative strategy and successfully done by the local government unit led Mayor Pacalioga.
Since 2008, the OWA has been given every two years to individuals who have promoted globalization in a way that is not only oriented on profit maximization, but on the three pillars of sustainability: ecology, social aspects, and economic welfare.
Before leaving for Germany, Secretary Proceso J. Alcala, prepared a short send-off program for Mayor Pacalioga and his party which was highlighted with a Memorandum of Agreement signing for the strong support of the Department of Agriculture for the sustainable organic agriculture program in Dumingag.
The department hopes that the award received by the Municipality of Dumingag will serve as a catalyst to change the face of sustainable farming system in the Philippines
