Group to new Energy chief: Cancel new coal power projects
PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino Jr. this week appointed Jericho “Icot” Petilla as the new Secretary of the Department of Energy (DOE).
“We would like to welcome his appointment into office by inviting him to a nationwide tour of communities affected by coal-fired power plants, as well as communities who are struggling against new coal plant proposals approved by the DOE. Hopefully he will be more receptive to reason than his predecessor,” said Anna Abad, Climate and Energy campaigner for Greenpeace Southeast Asia.
“Greenpeace hopes that once he has seen the real impacts, Secretary Jericho Petilla, will end the strong pro-coal energy bias of the DOE, and fully enforce the Renewable Energy Law.
“As the new DOE head, Sec. Petilla has a real opportunity to shift the country’s direction towards renewable energy systems that are more profitable and more favourable for all Filipinos.
“Upon assumption of office, the new energy chief should:
1) Immediately cancel all new coal power projects;
2) Phase out existing coal facilities and immediately comply with his department’s statutory mandate to use only energy technologies that do not sacrifice ecological concerns; and
3) Increase the country’s renewable energy targets to facilitate a massive uptake of clean sustainable energy in the country
“Secretary Petilla should take this opportunity to reverse the Department of Energy’s shameful track record of promoting coal-fired power plants which put community health and livelihood at risk, aside from abetting climate change. He should prioritize RE investments that will bring a truly secure and sustainable energy future for the Filipino people,” the group said.
