One soldier wounded as fighting between gov’t troops and NPA rebels in Iloilo
AN army trooper was reportedly wounded as fighting erupts between government troops and communist rebels Saturday morning in a remote village in Iloilo province, military reports said.
Initial reports reaching Camp Aguinaldo, the military general headquarters in Manila, said the fighting occurred at around 7:20 am at Sitio Tabionan, Brgy. Bucari in Leon of the said province.
The reports said troops of the 82nd Infantry Battalion under 1st Lt. Camlon Ramones, were patrolling at the said area following reported presence of New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in the area when the clash took place.
One soldier, whose identity are withheld, was wounded in the ensuing firefight that lasted for several minutes until the rebels decided to withdrew after sensing the arrival of army reinforcement.
The reports added that pursuit operations are now being conducted by government troops against the fleeing rebels.
“Our persistent call for peace with the people shall continue despite this response from the NPA rebels,” said Major General Jose Mabanta Jr., commander of the army’s 3rd Infantry Division.
