Casiño welcomes call to junk VFA
PARTY list representative and senatorial candidate Teddy Casiño today welcomed the statement of Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago, adding that in fact, there is already a pending House Joint Resolution (HJR) terminating the VFA.
HJR 7 was filed by Casiño on August 18, 2010 with the other members of the Makabayan bloc in the House of Representatives.
“We filed this resolution a week after Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago herself filed Senate Joint Resolution 3 dated August 11, 2010. What is needed now is for both the Senate and House of Representatives to immediately pass the resolutions,” said the lawmaker.
“We welcome Sen. Santiago’s renewed call for the immediate junking of the onerous agreement and hope that we can work together on the matter,” said the Makabayan senatorial bet.
Yesterday reports came out saying that Sen. Santiago will file on Monday a joint resolution calling for the termination of the Visiting Forces Agreement between the Philippines and the United States.
“We have always been consistent in our call to junk the VFA since it was implemented in 1999, in fact in the 15th Congress alone we have at least 4 House resolutions calling for an investigation of the VFA and its termination,” he added.
“The recent toxic waste dumping in Subic is just one of the many reasons to junk the VFA, let us not wait for more violations of our rights and sovereignty before we finally kick them out again,” he said.
“Dahil sa VFA eh nagiging tambakan tayo ng mga toxic waste ng US. Dapat talaga e matagal nang ibinasura ang kasunduang ito. Ang mas masama pa eh dahil sa buong bansa pwedeng dumaong ang mga barko ng US e, maaaring di lang sila sa Subic nagtapon ng toxic waste,” said Casiño.
