One rebel killed in encounter in Surigao del Sur – Army
AN alleged New People’s Army (NPA) rebel was killed following a firefight with government troops in a remote village in Surigao del Sur Thursday morning, a military official said.
Lt. Colonel Eugenio Julio Osias Jr., said that the encounter between government troops and NPA rebels took place at around 9:55am at Sitio Lagangan, Brgy. Caras-an, Tago town of said province.
Osias said that troops of the Bravo Coy of the 29th Infantry Battalion where conducting a combat operation at the said area encountered a group 25 NPA rebels resulting to a fierce firefight.
The firefight between the two sides lasted for 30 minutes resulting to one rebel killed and unknown numbers of rebels were wounded while no casualties were reported on the government side, Osias said.
The military official said that government troops have recovered from the encounter site one AK-47 assault rifle and one M16 rifle left behind by the fleeing rebels.
Osias said that troops of the 29th IB are still conducting pursuit operations against the fleeing rebels.
