Residents in Brgy Del Monte, QC put up barricades vs demolition
RESIDENTS of an urban poor community in 67 West Riverside Street, Barangay Del Monte in Quezon City have set up barricades against a possible continuation of demolition of their homes today, November 15. At the same time, they are calling for justice for the victims of violent demolition yesterday.
Twelve homes were demolished yesterday, November 14, at around 10am to implement a 5-year old Supreme Court ruling that favors a certain Preciosa Alvaro who claims to be the owner of 1,044 square meters parcel of land in Barangay Del Monte, situated at the back of Masambong Police Precinct. Some 30 policemen led by Superintendent Pedro Sanchez of QCPD Station 2 (Masambong) including SWAT operatives had aided the demolition crew.
The parcel of land is home to some 72 urban poor settlers who vow to defend their community. Leader of 67 West Neighborhood Association-KADAMAY Jenito Nueva claims some of the residents have lived in the area for more than 55 years, and it is the residents who developed the land in years.
Some 60 families are expected to be evicted this morning as the demolition of homes continues. They are prepared to do everything to avoid a repeat of the demolition of homes yesterday.
