Troops recovers endangered sea turtles to be sold in Palawan
SOME 123 endangered sea turtles, meant to be sold as delicacies, were recovered last Tuesday by naval elements and local officials in a remote village in Balabac, Palawan, military reports said Friday.
Navy spokesman, Colonel Omar Tonsay, said the sea turtles were placed inside three submerged cages in the vicinity of Sitio Dunglog shore, Brgy. Caguisan, Balabac in an operation against poachers Tuesday morning.
The navy spokesman said that out of 123 sea turtles recovered, 117 of them are alive and 6 were already dead.
Tonsay said the cages were concealed among the mangroves in the area with four nipa huts as observation posts against authorities.
The navy spokesman said the operation was conducted based on information they received regarding the illegal activities of poachers collecting sea turtles to be sold to Chinese buyers.
The team however failed to arrest six poachers who immediately fled onboard small boats towards unknown direction, the official said.
