Casiño expresses concern on CA ruling on Ortega case
PARTYLIST Rep. Teddy Casiño expressed his apprehension on the Court of Appeals (CA) decision on the Gerry Ortega murder case and chided the lawyer of the fugitives Reyes brothers to stop misinforming the public on the CA ruling.
The Court of Appeals acting on the petition filed by Mario Reyes, the court said Justice Secretary Leila De Lima committed grave abuse of discretion when she created the second panel of investigators through Department Order 710 despite the existence of a first panel that recommended the dismissal of murder case against the Reyes brothers.
“Ang malinaw dito e ang second panel lang na binuo ng Department of Justice (DOJ) ang kinikwestyon ng CA at di ang mga kaso laban sa mga Reyes. Nananatili pa din ang arrest warrant at ang sinasabing pabuya sa pagkakahuli sa kanila.Pero dahil sa desisyon na ito ay mukhang mas hahaba ang kaso at katarungan na naman ang mabibibinbin,” he added.
“This was a very technical decision and Atty. Ferdinand Topacio who broke the news to the media made the initial impression that the fugitive Reyes brothers have been exonerated or been declared not guilty. It also appeared that the Warrant of Arrest has been quashed,” said Casiño.
“But as it is, the truth is that the murder case is still pending in Palawan, the arrest warrant is in effect and there is still a reward of P2 million each for the fugitive Reyes brothers. Atty. Topacio should not make the public believe otherwise,” said the Makabayan senatorial bet.
“We have long been calling for justice for Dr. Gerry Ortega and Atty. Topacio should not add further torment to the suffering of the good doctor’s families and friends,” Casiño ended.
Casiño is the author of House Resolution 0863 calling for the investigation of the extra-judicial killing of Dr. Gerry Ortega.
