Rep. Angara exhorts young athletes: Continue to aim for excellence like Pacquiao
Aurora Rep. Edgardo “Sonny” Angara urged a group of young athletes participating in a regional sports meet in Central Visayas to continue striving for excellence, whether in the face of victory or defeat, just like Filipino boxing champ and Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao.
Speaking before the participants of the State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) Regional Meet in Bohol yesterday afternoon, Angara said the only way to achieve success in any field of endeavor is to demonstrate discipline, patience, and hard work.
“We are a nation of sports fans, there’s no doubt about that,” Angara said, pointing out that Central Visayas has produced many of the country’s top athletes, including Dondon Hontiveros, Mon Fernandez, Gabriel “Flash” Elorde, and Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire, Jr.
“I hope you will honor that tradition of excellence by always giving it your 110 percent,” the chairman of the House Committee on Higher and Technical Education added.
In a related development, Angara expressed confidence that pambansang kamao Manny Pacquiao will be able to rise up from the debacle of his devastating defeat to Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico.
“Manny has always been a survivor. His loss is heartbreaking but I am 100 percent certain he will rise again stronger than ever. He has brought honor and glory to the country many times in the past, and this temporary setback will never diminish that.
“In sports, and in Manny’s example, we learn that there are no real defeats, only steps towards the success we wish to achieve,” the solon from the lone district of Aurora stressed.
Angara especially lauded Pacquiao for the humility he showed. “Manny is equally magnanimous in defeat as he is in victory. When he got off the floor after being knocked out, the first thing he did was to congratulate his opponent. That is what all of us, especially young athletes like you, should emulate.
