Top NPA rebel in Central Visayas nabbed
A ranking New People’s Army (NPA) member and one the most wanted person in Central Visayas was arrested on Tuesday, the military said.
Reports by the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division identified the arrested NPA member as Filemon Mendrez, listed as 6th most wanted and facing robbery in band and rebellion charges.
Major General Jose Mabanta, commander of the 3rd ID said Mendrez was arrested by combine army and police troops Tuesday morning at Barangay Tubod, Manjuyod, Negros Oriental.
The army official said that Mendrez is also under the new joint Department of the Interior and Local Government-Department of National Defense reward list with a P5.25 million reward offer.
Mendrez or alias Tatay and Edon in the underground movement was the former head of Front Committee 2 in Central Visayas and later became the Deputy head of the Central Visayas Revolutionary Party Committee of the Communist Party of the Philippines.
The army official said that Mendrez currently head the armed group of the NPA in Negros Island.
“Law enforcement operations shall continue even as we observe a Suspension of Offensive Military Operations and ceasefire,” Mabanta said.
