Kalikasan to Comelec: Allow green party to participate in 2013 polls
KALIKASAN Partylist questions the Comission on Elections (Comelec) refusal to accredit the organization as a partylist representing the interests of marginalized sectors affected by environmental destruction.
The Comelec has recently admitted that its own inadvertent actions have resulted in 13 new applicants for accreditation, including Kalikasan, being included in the raffle to determine ballot numbers. Now, the Comelec has informed us Kalikasan’s name (#80 KALIKASAN) will be excluded from the list of partylists to be printed on the ballot.
“We call on the Supreme Court to keep Kalikasan Partylist in the ballot to provide space for the genuine marginalized partylists in the polls. Kalikasan’s track record can be traced from the broad environmental movement in the Philippines from as long as 15 years back,” the group said.
Kalikasan has long advocated for the genuine conservation of our country’s natural resources and the optimization of its use for the people’s genuine development. We have long struggled against policies and projects that have promoted the wanton exploitation of our natural wealth and compounded the people’s vulnerability and risk of disasters, especially in this time of climate change.
Drastic environmental reforms must be pushed through. Many have used and abused the environment, profiting from it at the expense of the marginalized sectors and future generations, the group claimed.
The Comelec, unfortunately, has disqualified party-lists that are genuinely serving the people while feigning to clean up the party-list system of bogus groups. It has denied us the right to represent the poor and marginalized sectors which are the first to be affected by environmental destruction and degradation, the group said.
Kalikasan Partylist said it will continue to petition the Supreme Court for a mandatory injunction and will continue to call for its rightful accreditation as a partylist.
As Kalikasan Partylist seeks the Supreme Court’s clarification on its case, the party believed that it should not be denied participation in the partylist elections and will continue its advocacy for the environment and for the people beyond the May Election.
