Casiño dismayed at cancellation of senatorial voter’s forum
MAKABAYAN senatorial candidate Teddy Casiño today said he was disappointed at the University of Santo Tomas’ decision to cancel a youth voter’s senatorial forum, citing the “presence of some pro-RH senatoriables.”
Casiño received the following text from the organizers of the forum, “Hi! We regret to inform you that the admin of the University of Santo Tomas has canceled the senatorial forum set tom becoz of the presence of some pro-RH senatoriables. The organizers will release a statement by tonight regarding the issue.”
“Not only is this a violation of academic freedom but an abridgment of our freedom of speech. We hope the UST administration reconsiders its decision,” said the Bayan Muna representative.
The progressive solon added that such discrimination is an insult to the intellect of UST students and other participants who have the right to listen and engage in substantial issues such as health, population and development – the theme of tomorrow’s supposed forum.
He said the forum was organized by the students themselves and that he believes that they are mature enough to hold their own moral judgment on the issue.
“Schools should be venues of constructive debates, not the stifling of contrary opinions,” said Casiño.
