Casiño urges congress to fast track probe on Dr. Ortega’s killing
PARTYLIST Rep. Teddy Casiño urged the House of Representatives to fast track the investigation on the killing of Palawan environmental defender and broadcast journalist Gerardo “Doc Gerry” Ortega considering that a Commission on Audit (COA) report on the Malampaya fund may hold the key to the reason behind Ortega’s assassination and as the Senate Blue Ribbon committee hearing started.
“After the death of Doc Gerry, I immediately filed House Resolution 863 hoping we can get the ones who masterminded his killing and the reasons behind it, but two years has passed and the resolution is still gathering dust on the Committee on Public Order and Safety. Though, with the COA report on the Malampaya funds misuse and Doc Gerry’s plan to expose this before his death, may give the investigation a shot in the arm,” said the progressive lawmaker.
A Commission on Audit (COA) report on the expenditure of some P2.6 billion in Malampaya funds that went to Palawan and former Governor Joel Reyes and his cronies are implicated based on the report.
“This was what cost Doc Gerry his life it is but right that we get to the bottom of this and punish not only those who are responsible for his death but for plundering the people’s coffer’s as well,” Casiño said.
