Legislator supports call to cancel gov’t incentives to giant Thai agri firm
PARTYLIST Rep. Teddy Casiño again moved for the cancellation of the government grant of incentives and tax breaks to Thai agri giant Charoen Pokphand Food Corporation (CP), saying that it would knock out majority of small local players in the livestock and feeds industry.
“On the contrary, the government should provide protection to our local farmers, like a headgear and a bat for a boxer, to be able to stand a chance.
Industry associations are objecting the BOIs incentives to CP, saying that the move will hit a local livestock industry that is already dealing with problems of outright and technical smuggling that government has not substantially addressed.
“It would be treason if government does not heed the call of Filipino agriculture associations and businesses to stop favoring this foreign firm. It would also mangle our nation’s capacity to attain food security in the long term,” Casiño said.
