Legislator urges M’cañang to investigate crashed US drone

A legislator called on Malacañang to explain the circumstances surrounding a US drone that was found in Philippine waters on Monday.

Fishermen recovered the unusual object floating in the waters of Masbate. The drone is believed to be a BQM-74E Chukar III, an aerial target drone belonging to the United States Navy.

“Malacañang owes the public a full explanation regarding the presence of this US Navy drone in the municipal waters of Masbate,” said ACT Teachers Partylist Rep. Antonio Tinio.

“Which US Navy warship deployed this drone, when, where, and and for what purpose? These are some of the questions that should be answered,” Tinio said

Tinio noted that the last known Balikatan exercise conducted in the Bicol region and involving US Navy warships took place in April 2009.

The party-list representative pointed out that the unexplained appearance of the drone once again raised issues regarding the presence of US military forces operating in Philippine territory. “Has there been a violation of our sovereignty?”

“Aside from constitutional and legal questions, could the drone have posed a threat to public safety?” he added.
