Marikina urban poor groups to protest outside Amang Rodriguez Medical Center vs privatization
SOME 100 Marikina residents will march to the gate of Amang Rodriguez Medical Center (AMMRC) today to protest impending privatization of their public hospital.
Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center (ARMMC) is a 150-bed public medical center located in Marikina City.
According to Kadamay, once privatized, ARMMC will no longer be accessible to the poor residents of Marikina, Antipolo, part of Pasig and the municipalities of Cainta, San Mateo and Rodriguez in Rizal, due to tremendous increase in the cost of its heath services.
The urban poor groups are calling on Marikina politicians, epecially those re-running for post in the coming midterm election to block the passage of House Bill 6069 at 6145 in the lower House which plans to corporatize 26 public hospitals in the country.
Incumbent Marikina Mayor Del De Guzman, 1st District Rep. Marcelino Teodoro, and 2nd District Romero Quimbo have filed COCs for another term in their offices.
Protesters will bring a streamer designed as an MMDA announcement bearing their call against privatization of public hospitals. They will hold petition signing and leafleteering drive among the visitors, patients and employees of AMMRC.
A similar protest will be hold by 12:30pm at the Quirino Memorial Medical Center (QMMC) in Quezon City, another public hospital bound to be privatized under the Aquino administration.
The protest is part of Kadamay’s series of protests before the Pre-Bid Conference of the Modernization of the Philippine Orthopedic Center to be held at NKTI Diagnostic Center tomorrow where hundreds of urban poor and health workers are planning to stage a protest.
