Workers condemn scheme to abolish PCGG
THE Kilusang Mayo Uno condemned the Aquino government’s scheme to abolish the Presidential Commission on Good Government.
The PCGG’s abolition is a betrayal of the Filipino workers’ and people’s struggle for justice over the grave crimes of the US-backed Marcos dictatorship,.
Because the Aquino government is not committed to the Filipino people’s quest for justice, it is saying that recovery of the Marcoses’ ill-gotten wealth is not feasible. It is setting the stage for dropping the cases of human-rights violations against the Marcoses.
“We condemn the Aquino government for paying lip service to continuing the hunt for the Marcoses’ loot even as it schemes to abolish the main body that is tasked to do so. It is further shedding its pretenses of being anti-corruption and matuwid or righteous,” the group said in a statement.
Elmer “Bong” Labog, KMU chairperson, said Pres. Aquino is pursuing his political accomodation of the Marcoses and his undeclared austerity program at the expense of the Filipino workers’ and people’s fight for justice.
The Aquino government’s reconciliation with the Marcoses bodes ill for the people’s quest for justice over the crimes committed by former Pres. Macapagal-Arroyo. If the Aquinos can reconcile with the Marcoses, they can surely reconcile with the Arroyos, Labog said.
He said the Aquino government is guilty of historical amnesia. Pres. Aquino may have forgiven the Marcoses for their crimes against his family, but we the Filipino workers and people and remain steadfast in fighting for justice over the Marcoses’ crimes against us.
The scheme to abolish the PCGG exposes the rottenness of the country’s elite-dominated political system. It shows that factions of the country’s elite can easily set aside their differences and condone each other’s crimes against the Filipino workers and people, he added.
