Workers hit Aquino, US for violating PHL sovereignty
THE recovery of a crashed US drone plane in the waters of Masbate highlights Pres. Benigno ‘Noynoy’ Aquino’s collusion with the US in violating the country’s sovereignty, the labor center Kilusang Mayo Uno said.
The group said “It hints at the likelihood that Pres. Aquino has allowed the US to fly drone planes and jetfighters in the country’s airspace at will and in violation of the country’s laws.”
Elmer “Bong” Labog, KMU chairperson, said “No self-respecting country will allow another country, even the world’s most powerful, to fly military planes in its airspace without restrictions or regulations.”
“We condemn the Aquino government for trying to cover up its puppetry to the US by saying that the drone originated from Guam and was merely washed ashore in Masbate, despite its failure to hold any investigation on the matter.
“Such lies cannot hide the fact that the Aquino government has not shown resolve in upholding the country’s sovereignty by at least clearly setting and strictly enforcing limits to the US’s military activity in the country,” the group said in a statement.
The group expressed alarm that these drones are flying over the country in order to map out sections of the Philippines that are rich in mineral and other natural resources, and constitute a prelude to further plunder of the country’s resources.
“We are also alarmed that these drones are flying over the Philippines in order to conduct surveillance operations against rebel groups in the country. This constitutes a violation of the country’s sovereignty and intervention into the Philippines’ internal affairs,” the statement said.
The progressive labor group condemned the US for using the Visiting Forces Agreement as a license to gain unrestricted movement within the country’s territory.
