MANILA, Philippines – Sinegundahan ni Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel III ang posisyon ni Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr. na tila nagdadalawang-isip na palawigin pa ang state of calamity sa bansa dulot ng COVID-19 pandemic.

“I agree with the President. COVID-19 specifically is no longer the cause of any ‘calamity’ here in the Philippines,” ani Pimentel nitong Sabado, Disyembre 31.

Matatandaan na nitong Huwebes, Nobyembre 29 ay sinabi ni Marcos na nag-aalinlangan siyang palawigin pa ang state of calamity sa kabila ng hiling ng Department of Health (DOH).

“I’m still very, very hesitant to continue the state of calamity, to extend it, because again, we are not in a state of calamity anymore, technically speaking,” sinabi ng Pangulo.

“And that is the wrong mindset to be approaching the New Year with. So we’re still trying to find ways to continue to provide the benefits to our health workers which is the main issue without the state of calamity,” dagdag niya.

Sa kabila nito, sinabi ng DOH na maaaring maapektuhan ang COVID-19 vaccination program ng bansa kung hindi na palalawigin pa ang state of calamity.

“[W]e cannot procure additional doses, including the bivalent vaccines. Also, it is expected that the number of vaccinators will decrease as other cadres such as pharmacists may no longer be tapped and willingness to vaccinate may decrease as immunity from liability is not guaranteed,” anang Kagawaran.

Nagpahayag naman ng pagtanggap ang DOH na humanap ng ibang alternatibo upang hindi maantala ang vaccination program ng bansa katulad ng pagbibigay ng special authority to purchase. RNT/JGC
