Inflation, manatiling mataas ngayong Pebrero – BSP

MANILA, Philippines- Inaasahang mananatiling mataas ngayong buwan ng Pebrero ang inflation sa gitna ng mga problema sa suplay ng ilang food items at mas mataas na  utility costs.

Sa  sidelines ng  Manila Times Economic Forum sa Makati City, sinabi ni Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Senior Assistant Governor for the Monetary Policy Sub-sector Iluminada Sicat  na ang na tinatayang  mataas pa rin ang February inflation print.

Nakita ng Pilipinas ang inflation– rate ng  pagtaas sa presyo ng goods at services– na 8.7% nitong Enero, na ikinagulat ng economic managers.

“This is a fresh 14-year high or the fastest inflation print since the 9.1% recorded in November 2008,” ani Sicat.

Aniya,  “the still elevated inflation expectation for February would be due to “an increase in utility rate… then the supply for some of the vegetables are not still there.”

Gayunman, asahan naman umano ang pagbuti ng inflation sa month-on-month basis.

“The [inflation] rate in January was very high already… looking at the base, there is an improvement month-on-month because January was already high,” ani Sicat.

“Without me saying what the number is, we can predict that it’s going to be slower than what we had in January versus December,” wika pa niya.

Sa gitna ng nananatiling mataas na inflation trend, naghahanda naman ang pamahalaan na maglunsad ng panibagong  round ng  cash aid sa ilalim ng  Targeted Cash Transfer (TCT) program para tulungan na mapagaan ang pasanin ng mga mamimili.

Sa ilalim ng panukalang cash aid program,  may  9.3 milyong“poorest of the poor” ang makatatanggap ng P1,000 na hahatiin para sa distribusyon sa loob ng dalawang buwan.

Sabi pa ni Sicat, ang BSP “will make use of all available tools in order to stabilize and bring back the inflation trend back to the target range.”

Samantala, target ng pamahalaan na i-settle ang inflation sa ceiling na 2% hanggang  4%  ngayong taon.

Nakatakda namang magpalabas sa  Marso 7, 2023 ang Philippine Statistics Authority  (PSA) ng official inflation figures para sa buwan ng Pebrero. Kris Jose
