Isyu ng pamamahala, kalayaan inilantad ng BSP sa Maharlika Funds

MANILA, Philippines – Nagpahayag ng pangamba si Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Gov. Felipe Medalla patungkol sa proposed Maharlika Investment Fund na isinusulong ng mga ka-alyansa ni Pangulong Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. sa Kongreso.

Ang Maharlika Investment Fund ay isang sovereign wealth fund sa ilalim ng House Bill 6398 na inaprubahan ng House Committee on Banks and Financial Intermediaries na naglalayong palakasin ang investible state assets ng bansa sa pagpapaunlad ng social services.

Sa panayam, sinabi ni Medalla na posibleng magkaroon ng isyu sa pamamahala at magkaroon din ng impact sa pondo o dollar reserves ng BSP.

“To me the experience of 1MDB Malaysia is the biggest risk, right?”

“Even if the current guys are okay, will the guys five years from now will still be okay? To me, it’s a governance issue,” pahayag ni Medalla sa panayam ng Bloomberg.

Matatandaan na nasangkot sa graft and corruption scandal ang sovereign wealth fund ng Malaysia na 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) at nahatulan ng 12-taong pagkakakulong ang dating prime minister ng bansa na si Najib Razak na sangkot dito.

Dagdag pa, nangangamba rin si Medalla na makaaapekto ito sa kalayaan ng central bank ng bansa.

“If they say we will take the central bank’s dollars, then what will you use now if your reserves are reduced because they’ve been taken for the wealth fund?” aniya.

“We will have less ammunition the next time there is international volatility that was related to the peso and the dollar,” dagdag ng BSP governor.

Kung sa kanyang personal na opinyon, tutol si Medalla na i-invest ang foreign reserves ng bansa sa naturang fund.

“Will the BSP be willing to invest some of its foreign reserves into the fund? My personal view is unless we are compelled we should not,” giit nito.

“But I’m a law-abiding person. If the law says we will, we will,” dagdag ni Medalla. RNT/JGC
