MANILA, Philippines – Nanawagan ang mga mambabatas ng Makabayan bloc na imbestigahan sa Kamara ang nangyaring oil spill mula sa lumubog na motor tanker Princess Empress sa Oriental Mindoro, sabay-sabing ang delay sa ayuda ay nagresulta sa matinding epekto sa mga komunidad sa probinsya.

Ang panawagan na ito ng congressional inquiry ay sa ilalim ng inihain nina House Deputy Minority Leader France Castro, House Assistant Minority Leader Arlene Brosas, at Kabataan party-list Representative Raoul Manuel na House Resolution 869.

Iginiit ng mga mambabatas na nasa Verde Island Passage Marine Corridor ang oil spill-affected areas na may lawak na 1.4 milyong ektarya sakop ang mga probinsya ng Batangas, Marinduque, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, at Romblon, at mayroong mahigit dalawang milyon katao ang naninirahan sa mga nasabing lugar.

Inihayag din nila na batay sa datos ng pamahalaan, mahigit 30,000 pamilya o 137,230 katao na mula sa 121 barangay sa MIMAROPA at Western Visayas ang naapektuhan ng oil spill hanggang nitong Marso 11.

“A fishing ban was implemented until the spill was cleaned up, affecting the livelihoods of more than 18,000 fisherfolks in 60 villages. The oil spill will adversely affect Mindoro Oriental’s fishing Industry, possibly resulting in lower fish catches and production,” pahayag ng Makabayan bloc.

“The national government must provide immediate compensation for the fisherfolk and familes affected by the oil spill, and must exhaust all means to stop the further spread of the industrial fuel oil. Now, therefore, be it resolved, as it is hereby resolved, that the House of Representatives through the Committee on Natural Resources and Committee on Aquaculture and Fisheries Resource immediately conduct an investigation, in aid of legislation, on the effects of the oil spill caused by the MT Princess Empress on the environment, livelihood of fisherfolks, and the local production of fish,” dagdag pa nila.

Sa hiwalay na press conference, nagpaalala si Castro sa pamahalaan na siguruhing matutulungan ang mga apektadong komunidad sa pinsala na idinulot ng oil spill.

“We have Republic Act 9483 which is the Oil Spill Compensation Act. This compensation should not be given on a whim,” ani Castro.

“The budget for this is P400 million, and the government should give it to affected residents and not negotiate amounts just to get it over with sooner rather than later,” dagdag pa niya.

Matatandaan na lumubog sa dagat na sakop ng Naujan, Oriental Mindoro noong Pebrero 28 ang MT Princess Empress dahil sa engine problem.

May karga ang naturang motor tanker ng aabot sa 900,000 litro ng industrial fuel.

Iniulat naman ng Department of National Defense kay Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr. na may 169 indibidwal na ang nagkakasakit dahil sa oil spill. RNT/JGC

MANILA, Philippines- Nagpaabot ng pagbati si Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr. kay dating Pangulong Rodrigo Roa Duterte na nagdiriwang ngayon ng kanyang ika-78 kaarawan, ngayong araw ng Martes, Marso 28, 2023.

Sa kanyang official Facebook page, sinabi ni Pangulong Marcos na “What a pleasure for me to wish happy birthday to ating predecessor, PRRD. Happy birthday to you, Mr President.”

Sinabi pa ni Pangulong Marcos, naiintindihan na niya ngayon si Duterte kung bakit kung minsan, noong Pangulo pa siya ng Pilipinas ay napapamura ito.

“Now I know why. Pero huwag niyong inaalala lahat ng magandang sinimulan ninyo, we will continue to work on it. We will contineu to make sure that those projects that you started will be successful and I am glad that I am able to continue the good work that you started,” ani Pangulong Marcos.

Hindi naman alam ni Pangulong Marcos kung paano makakapag-relax pa si Duterte matapos ang “lifetime of work” subalit umaasa siya na maghihinay-hinay na ito sa trabaho at magkaroon ng maayos na selebrasyon ng kanyang kaarawan.

MANILA, Philippines- Magtatalaga ang Philippine National Police (PNP) ng halos 78,000 tauhan sa tourist spots at iba pang mga lugar hindi lamang sa Semana Santa, maging sa natitirang bahagi ng “summer” break.

Inihayag ni PNP chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin, Jr. na may kabuuang 38,387 pulis ang aatasang magpatrulya habang may kabuuang 39,504 pulis ang ipakakalat sa partikular na “areas of convergence” gaya ng major thoroughfares, transportation hubs, terminals, commercial areas, at mga simbahan.

“The PNP National Headquarters has issued operational guidelines for Police Regional and Provincial Offices to implement their respective law enforcement and public safety plan for the 60-day summer holiday season,” ani Azurin.

“We are expecting a large number of travelers during this entire period, and we want to make sure that they will have a safe and enjoyable experience,” dagdag niya.

MANILA, Philippines- Walang susunod na hakbang ang Philippine government matapos ibasura ng International Criminal Court, sa Appeals Chamber nito, ang petisyon na suspendihin ang imbestigasyon sa drug war sa bansa, ayon kay Pangulong Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. nitong Martes.

“We don’t have next move. That’s the extent of our involvement with the ICC. That ends our involvement with the ICC,” giit ni Marcos.

“The appeal has failed. In our view, there’s nothing more that we can do… At this point we are essentially disengaging from any contact, communication with the ICC.”

Binigyang-diin ni Marcos na wala nang ugnayan sa pagitan ng Pilipinas at ICC, at nanindigan sa posisyon ng pamahalaan na hindi ito makikipagtulungan sa international body.

“We ended up in the same position that we started with and that is we cannot cooperate with the ICC considering the very serious questions about their jurisdiction and about what we consider to be interference and practically attacks on the sovereignty of the Republic,” aniya.

“So that pretty much it, we have no longer any recourse when it comes to the ICC.”
