Pagbili ng helicopter sa US kinokonsidera ng Pinas

MANILA, Philippines – Kinokonsidera ng gobyerno ng Pilipinas na bumili ng Chinook helicopters mula sa Estados Unidos matapos iatras ang kontrata sa pagbili sana ng 16 Russian helicopters.

Sa isang online media forum, sinabi ni Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel Romualdez na ang kanselasyon ng kontrata ay “precipitated mainly by the war in Ukraine.”

“While there are sanctions expected to come our way, from the United States and western countries, obviously it is not in our interest to continue and pursue this contract,” ayon kay Romualdez.

Ang Chinooks ang ipapalit sa ‘heavy lift helicopters’ na kailangan ng armed forces ng bansa para sa ‘movement of troops at disaster preparedness.’

“I understand the United States has offered to try to come up with a similar amount that we were going to spend with the Russian helicopters. In other words, at a special price,” ani Romualdez.

“The US deal offers maintenance services and helicopter parts,” dagdag na pahayag nito.

Matatandaang, nilagdaan ang military procurement contract noong November 2021 sa ilalim ng administrasyong Duterte.

Ito’y para bumili ng 16 Mi-17 Russian military transport helicopters na may karagdagang unit ng Soviet era heavy-lift aircrafts na isasama ng walang bayad.

Nauna rito, bumuo ang Department of National Defense ng isang komite para gawing pormal ang withdrawal o pag-atras mula sa kontrata na nagkakahalaga ng P12.7 bilyong piso o US$244.2 million.

Tinitingnan din aniya ng gobyerno ang pagkuha ng suplay ng ibang bagay na maaaring kailangan ng bansa mula sa Russia kapalit ng helicopters.

“As part of the payment of the I think, of about US$38 million that we paid the downpayment for the helicopters,” ani Romualdez sabay sabing. “So, in exchange for that, we will probably get some of the arms that we may need.” Kris Jose
