Pagka-absuwelto kay Maria Ressa, ‘important win’ sa media – Hontiveros

MANILA, Philippines – Isang malaking panalo sa sektor ng media ang pagkakaabsuwelto ni Maria Ressa, journalist at Nobel Prize winner sa kasong tax evasion, ayon kay Senador Risa Hontiveros.

Sa pahayag, sinabi ni Hontiveros na mahalaga ang pagkapanalo ni Ressa sa tax evasion case matapos mapawalang-sala ang naturang hepe ng Rappler kabilang ang kanyang kompanya.

“The dismissal of these trumped-up case in an important win for free and defiant journalism in sa Philippines, “ ayon sa pahayag ng Senador sa media.

“In a democracy, truth-telling and sharing independent views is not a crime – even if its irks and annoys the powers that be. I am one with our nation’s free press in continuing to hold the line and fighting for a truly fee and democratic nation. As always, courage on,” giit pa niya.

Umaasa din si Hontiveros na mapapawalang-bisa ang iba pang kaso na isinampa laban kay Ressa at Rappler.

“These (charges) were only intended to silence and intimidate members of the media from reporting on and speaking against the excesses of the previous administration particularly on the bloody, abusive and failed war on drugs,” aniya.

Sinabi pa ni Hontiveros na hindi lamang malaking paglulustay ng salapi ng bayan ang patuloy na panggigipit sa journalist at oposisyon, kundi maging ang resources at atensiyon ng gobyerno.

“These vindictive efforts should end immediately,” giit niya.

Naghain ng kasong tax evasion ang Department of Justice noong 2018 hinggil sa kabiguan ng Rappler at ni Ressa na ideneklara ang P162.41 milyong kita mula sa paglalabas ng Philippine Depository Receipts (PDRs) noong 2015. Ernie Reyes
