Sa ostrich incident: Pag-iisyu ng permit sa ‘unfit’ carers pinahihigpitan

Manila, Philippines – Hinikayat ng Philippine Animal Welfare Society ang Department of Environment and Natural Resources na paghigpitan ang wildlife permits na iniisyu sa “unfit” carers at magpatupad ng mas maigting na screening measures.

Ito ang naging pahayag ng PAWS makaraang maganap ang insidente kung saan dalawang ostrich ang tumatakbo sa isang pribadong subdibisyon sa Quezon City.

Maaari anila ito magresulta sa serious injury sa tao na huhuli sa kanila at ang mga natatakot na hayop.

“Loud sounds and being near roads or running vehicles cause ostriches great stress. For this reason alone, permits should not be granted for the keeping of these animals in residential areas,” saad sa pahayag.

“The birds could have easily been injured or could have caused harm when they were cornered.”

“The ordinary citizens who attempted to capture the animal were probably not aware that ostriches can inflict lacerations with their sharp toenails or break human bones with one powerful kick,” dagdag pa ng grupo.

Samantala, batay naman sa DENR ay legal ito hanggat sumusunod sa Republic Act No. 9147 at suportado ng ilang dokumento. RNT/FGDC
