SMS pol ads kailangan ng users’ consent

Manila, Philippines — Nilinaw ng National Privacy Commission (NPC) na hindi mata-transmit ang political advertisements na walang consent ng telco service subscribers.

Sa Laging Handa public briefing, sinabi ni NPC chair Raymund Liboro na ang pagpapadala ng unsolicited SMS (short messaging system) text blasts at pangongolekta ng mobile phone number para rito ay labag sa Republic Act No. 10173 o ang Data Privacy Act of 2012.

Pinapayagan lamang aniya ang telcos na mag-transmit ng masse emergency messages tulad ng mga ipinapadala ng National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

“You should be asked first if you want to receive [such a message],” saad ni Liboro.

“To all the involved telcos, especially now that it is election time, you must be reminded of your responsibility on the proper handling of the personal data of citizens because you have obligations and liabilities if you violate under the Data Privacy Act.”

“This is a matter that the NTC (National Telecommunications Commission) should look into and it is already doing so.” RNT/FGDC
