VALENZUELA Mayor Wes Gatchalian has laid out major plans of the local government for the future of education sector in the city including the ‘Big Brother, Big Sister Teaching’ and ‘Lola’t Lolo Teaching’ programs.

He cited the various education programs initiated by his predecessors, his own brothers – now Senator Win Gatchalian and Rep. Rex Gatchalian.

Senator Sherwin had his ‘WIN ang Edukasyon Program’ while the former mayor-turned-congressman spearheaded the’ Education 360 Degrees Investment Program’.

Education 360 Degrees Investment Program is a systematic and holistic approach to improving the overall quality and standards of the basic education in the city.

Mayor Wes said one of his plans is the ‘Big Brother, Big Sister Teaching program’, a mentorship scheme that will focus on students who are still struggling to catch up with their current curriculum because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The program will source Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Valenzuela students to serve as mentors for the other students.

The city government will adjust the schedules of both the mentors and the students to fit with each other.”

Second is the ‘Lola’t Lolo Teaching’ program, wherein qualified and capable senior citizens will be trained to teach and guide the students to catch up with their curriculum.

“Grandpas and Grandmas take care of their grandkids with extra care, so we should use them because they are still capable. I always see grandpas and grandmas dropping off and fetching their grandkids from school every day,” Mayor Wes said.

Thirdly is the Solo Parent Teaching Program which will focus on single parents who have several jobs to financially provide for their children.

“The program will coach solo parents to teach and guide their children even on their jammed schedule. This is in support with the Solo Parent Federation which was organized during my term as District 1 congressman,” he said.
